The Twin Heists

Dear Art and History (and Democracy) Lovers,

This week, in broad daylight, the world witnessed two grand thefts.
One took place in Paris – the Crown Jewels vanished from their glass case, stolen in silence and skill, likely never to be seen again. The odds are high they’ll be broken apart, melted down, scattered across black markets and hidden vaults, their unity destroyed for profit.

Across the ocean, a second theft is unfolding, slower but no less devastating.
The White House – the people’s house – is being torn down and remade, not in the image of “We the People,” but in the image of one man. Marble and metaphor alike are being chipped away, repainted, rebuilt to suit the vision of a single ego.
And this time, what’s being stolen isn’t gold or gemstone – it’s the very idea of democracy.

We’re watching the desecration of something sacred.
The Constitution. The Republic. The belief that power belongs to the people.
It’s all being dismantled, piece by piece, right in front of us, while half the nation scrolls past as if it’s just another post in the feed.

In Paris, people will unite. They’ll lock the doors tighter, increase security, and vow to make sure such a theft never happens again.
But it will be too late for the jewels. They’ll be gone forever, their fragments scattered beyond repair.

Here in America, our time is running out.
The holes in our democracy are showing – wide, dangerous, and deliberate. We must come together now, not later. We must plug the breaches, reinforce the walls of justice, and protect what still stands. Because it’s already too late for the White House.

Let us at least save the soul that still flickers inside the idea of America.
The love of liberty. The courage of conscience. The right to say no to kings.

Because no matter how dark the theft, love – radical, fierce, democratic love – still belongs to us. Forever in resistance,
—The Radical Left
