In 1776, the United States did not yet truly exist as a unified nation. Thirteen distinct colonies clung to the Atlantic coast, each carrying different economies, cultures, religions, and identities. Two hundred and fifty years later, those same colonies have evolved into one of the most influential regions on Earth while still wrestling with many of the same questions about identity, unity, and belonging.
