Closets

In 1776, most Americans did not have closets as we imagine them today. Clothing lived in chests, armoires, and simple storage spaces because people owned fewer possessions and valued durability over abundance. Two hundred and fifty years later, closets have evolved into spaces of organization, identity, and even metaphor. This letter follows the journey from storing garments to storing versions of ourselves and asks what human beings choose to hide… and why.
