An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 08 – Metaphysics 5 (Metaphysical Libertarianism) – Part 7: Summary: What, me worry?

Dear Alfred E. Neuman,

You know, for all the talk about free will versus determinism, the truth is… it’s a bit of a false dichotomy.

We’ve spent this entire series digging into how our lives might be shaped by forces beyond our control – how patterns, programming, society, and even the laws of physics can push us along a path that feels predetermined. Yet, we also explored those moments when we surprise ourselves, make a choice out of nowhere, and experience the sweet, wild taste of freedom.

But here’s the thing: what if the question isn’t whether we have free will or whether we’re just robots? What if the question is about recognizing that we are the happening? We are the universe unfolding. We are the moment of decision, and that decision isn’t really separate from everything else.

It’s a bit like Alan Watts said: we are not separate from the universe. We are the universe, happening. Free will and determinism? They’re just labels on a process that’s far more fluid than we like to admit. Instead of trying to choose between opposites, maybe we can see them as part of the same unfolding – the coincidence of opposites.

This is where compatibilism steps in: it’s not about choosing one or the other, but about seeing how they work together. Free will doesn’t exist in isolation from the universe, and determinism isn’t a trap. The two can coexist as part of the same cosmic dance. We are the dancers and the dance.

So, we ask you, dear reader:
How does the idea of compatibilism sit with you?
Do you find yourself caught in the struggle between choice and fate, or do you see it as one continuous process, unfolding and unpredictable, like the rest of existence?

Not to worry,
~ The Radical Left
