An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 04 – Metaphysics 1 (The Nature of Reality) – Part 1: Introduction – What is real?

Dear Upside Down,

In the realm of reality, we find ourselves standing on the threshold of the unknown. Ontology and metaphysics invite us to peel back the layers of existence and ask: What is real? Like a journey through the Upside Down, we venture beyond the surface of what we see, seeking the essence of reality.

As we explore what makes reality real, we’ll dive into the questions that challenge our perceptions. Just like in the Matrix, we’ll ponder what it means to recognize reality and whether we’re willing to take the red pill or remain in the comfort of the familiar.

In this journey, we’ll weave through the different perspectives – from metaphysical idealism that values the intangible, to physicalism that grounds us in the tangible world. We’ll explore quantum theories and the notion that reality might just be a grand calculation.

And in the end, we’ll embrace the idea that our perspective shapes our reality. Reality is as much about the observer as it is about the observed.

So, let’s embark on this metaphysical journey and dear reader, we ask you: As we unravel the mysteries of reality, does it feel like you’re right-side up or upside down? The journey is as much about how we perceive as it is about what we perceive…let us hear yours.

From our perspective to yours,
