An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 05 – Metaphysics 2 (Metaphysical Dualism) – Part 5: Have you ever lost your mind?

Dear Descartes,

“I think, therefore I am.” Yet, what happens when our mind betrays us? In moments of panic, anger, or trauma, we often find ourselves “out of our minds.” The mind, that supposed seat of our identity, can sometimes slip away, leaving us questioning: If we cannot control our own thoughts, then who truly holds the reins?

This conundrum adds a wrinkle to dualism. If our mind is separate from the body, then what does it mean when we lose control of it? Does it imply that our essence is something more ethereal, a ghostly conductor of reality, beyond mere biology?

As we ponder these questions, we explore the nuances of dualism and what it means for our identity and our consciousness.

And we ask you, dear reader: Have you ever lost your mind? How did you find it again?
