An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 04 – Metaphysics 1 (The Nature of Reality) – Part 3: Wanna feel really good?

Dear Pain,

In the comfort of the pleasure machine, we find an oasis of constant joy, untouched by the rough edges of reality. It’s tempting to stay in that serene bubble, where everything is perfectly curated to our desires. But in that comfort, we risk losing the essence of what it means to truly live.

Just as we might linger in the foyer, afraid to open the door to the mansion of reality, we sometimes shy away from the discomfort that reality brings. Yet, it is precisely that discomfort, that pinch of pain, that confirms our existence and anchors us in the genuine fabric of life.

In our quest for truth, we must ask ourselves: Is the ease of a fabricated – or fake – reality worth the cost of genuine experience? Is the absence of pain truly a life fully lived?

Dear Pain, you are the reminder that reality, with all its imperfections, holds a richness that no pleasure machine can replicate. It is in that tension, that struggle, that we find the depth and authenticity of life.

So, dear reader, as we explore the tension between comfort and reality, we invite you to reflect: Are you willing to embrace the discomfort that leads to a deeper, more authentic existence?

With a pinch and a wink,
