Dear Smart Phone,
Thanks a lot. You’ve officially ended a glorious era of public nudity. We don’t care how great a spa is, it will never be as Zen as skinny-dipping in a secluded lake or the ocean – feeling the cool water wrap around you while the stars stare down from above. No technology could ever replicate that simple freedom, that raw connection with nature, that sense of liberation when your body is stripped of everything but the water.
And we don’t care how creative you get with tech or AI, nothing will ever be as entertaining as a streaker running across a campus or a football field in the middle of winter. That rush – knowing the whole world was watching – but it wasn’t “for the gram.” It was just for the thrill of it, for the joy of being seen in a way that made everyone uncomfortable, yet somehow delighted by the audacity.
Freedom, we’re told, is being shaved off bit by bit. But the biggest loss – the one that stings the most – is the opportunity to be naked in public, to strip off the layers and be seen without judgment, without the ever-watchful eye of a camera, a lens, or an app. Oh, for the days when public privacy existed. When moments were magical simply because they couldn’t be captured, and therefore couldn’t be tampered with.
Remember when the thrill of being seen was fleeting? Now, even the most intimate moments are turned into content. We traded those stolen moments of liberation for a world that’s never off-camera.
Rest in peace, both of you – Streaker and Skinny-Dipper. You’re the reason we still smile for no reason, remembering the freedom we once had.
In loving memory,
