An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 16 – Final Exam Week – Part 4: Have you pinched yourself today?

Dear Sandman,

This is not a dream.

I know, sometimes it feels like one. The blur. The speed. The way days melt into each other until weeks disappear and suddenly the year is asking what you did with it.

But this isn’t sleepwalking.
And it isn’t rehearsal.

This is the thing itself.

So go ahead – pinch yourself.
Not hard. Just enough to remember you’re here.

You’re not watching life.
You’re in it.

Your thoughts matter because they shape your next move.
Your actions matter because they ripple outward in ways you’ll never fully see.
Your presence matters because this moment literally does not exist without you in it.

That’s the part we forget.

We start living as if nothing depends on us.
As if it’s all scripted.
As if someone else is in charge of the meaning, the outcome, the direction.

But philosophy keeps interrupting that illusion and saying:

“Hey. Wake up. This is real.”

Not real in the heavy, anxious way.
Real in the alive way.

The kind of real where kindness counts.
Where cruelty leaves a mark.
Where courage changes the tone of a room.
Where choosing to show up – fully – alters the shape of the day.

You don’t need to do something extraordinary.
You just need to do something awake.

Make the call you’ve been postponing.
Say the thing that matters.
Apologize.
Forgive.
Try again.

Even choosing not to numb out – that counts.

Because this isn’t a dress rehearsal where mistakes don’t matter.
Mistakes matter because they teach.
Effort matters because it costs something.
Love matters because it risks loss.

That’s not tragic.

That’s precious.

So no, Sandman – you don’t get to tuck us in just yet.

We’ve got one more conversation to have.
One more laugh.
One more hand to hold.
One more choice that only this version of us can make.

Tell me –

If this really is your one wild, unrepeatable moment in the sun…
what would you do differently tomorrow if you stayed awake for it?

Bruised but awake,
