An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 15 – Meaning of Life – Part 1: Introduction – How long do you want to live?

Dear Turritopsis dohrnii,

Let’s get the awkward part out of the way early.

We’re all going to die…well, except for you.

For us?

No exceptions. No loopholes. No secret back doors.
None of US gets out of this alive.

And strangely, that’s not a problem.
It’s the starting point.

You, on the other hand, complicate things. You’re famous for cheating the clock, for slipping backward instead of forward, for hitting rewind when the rest of us only know how to press play. While we age, you reset. While we decay, you begin again. You are biology’s mic drop in the middle of our existential conversation.

Which raises a dangerous question.

If we could live forever…
Would we want to?

At first glance, the answer feels obvious. More time. More chances. More sunsets. More love. More everything. Who wouldn’t want that?

But linger on it for a moment.

Would forever sharpen life… or dull it?
Would urgency disappear? Would meaning thin out? Would tomorrow stop mattering if it never truly arrived?

Because here’s the uncomfortable truth most of us avoid until it’s forced on us:
Time is the one resource we cannot earn, borrow, save, or replace.

We don’t know how much we have.
We don’t know when it runs out.
And many people never even stop long enough to ask what they’re spending it on.

They follow scripts. They chase expectations. They postpone joy.
“I’ll do that later.”
“I’ll say that someday.”
“I’ll live once things settle down.”

Except things don’t settle down.
And someday has a habit of vanishing without notice.

That’s why this week exists.

Not to depress you. Not to scare you.
But to wake you up.

Because the question isn’t just how long you want to live.
It’s how.

What makes a life feel full instead of merely long?
What turns time into something more than just days crossed off a calendar?
And if this ride ends sooner than expected… will you feel like you showed up for it?

So tell me, immortal friend:

If you could live forever, would you choose to?
And if not… what does that say about the way the rest of us should be living right now?

Let’s find out.

Living it with you – one day at a time,
