A Letter to Thomas Crafts (1740-1799)
Dear Tommy,
In 1776, fireworks were orange, loud, and glorious.
Imported black-powder rockets lit the night sky to honor kings…
until colonists decided kings weren’t so necessary anymore.
Suddenly, those same rockets celebrated freedom, independence, and a brand-new country. Candles flickered on city commons, lanterns glimmered on rooftops, and the first sparks of what would become a 250-year tradition flew high into the American night.
The first official Independence Day fireworks – July 4, 1777 – transformed city squares into living spectacles.
Philadelphia’s Commons hosted thirteen rockets, one for each colony, while Boston and New York followed suit, combining fireworks with cannon fire, musical fanfares, and improvised bonfires.

Italian-American pyrotechnic families, like the Gruccis, perfected aerial shows, blending artistry, precision, and spectacle.
Municipal displays expanded in scale and grandeur, with the 1976 Bicentennial showcasing the nation’s history, pride, and creativity through massive coordinated shows spanning cities and towns.
Now, rocket to 2026.

drones dance alongside rockets in perfectly choreographed aerial ballets.

Major cities, monuments, and local streets all join in for the Semiquincentennial, lighting the skies for the 250th birthday of the United States.
America has scaled this tradition into a billion-dollar industry, blending entertainment, civic pride, and cutting-edge technology, while continuing to inspire wonder across generations.
Yet, despite the dazzling evolution, some things remain the same.
Tommy, if you could peek over our shoulders now, you’d see that humans are still thrilled by spectacle, addicted to surprise, forever finding meaning in light against dark.
Fireworks are still rebellion, celebration, and joy – all at once.
