A Letter to Edward Holyoke (1728–1829)

Dear Eddie,

In 1776, climate control meant something beautifully simple…

Open the window.
Stoke the fire.
Move closer to the shade.
Pray for breeze.
Survive the winter.

Human beings did not yet imagine they might someday alter the climate of the entire planet itself.

They were simply trying to survive Tuesday.

And there you stood, Edward Holyoke, physician, scholar, and one of the earliest Americans to keep long-term weather records, carefully observing temperatures in a young nation still deeply vulnerable to nature’s moods.

In 1776, climate control was entirely local, physical, and passive.

Homes relied on:
fireplaces,
thick walls,
cross-ventilation,
high ceilings,
open windows,
shade trees,
porches,
cellars,
and layers of clothing to regulate comfort.

There were no thermostats.

The late 18th century still existed within what historians and climatologists often call the “Little Ice Age,” a period of cooler average temperatures that produced harsher winters and more volatile seasonal extremes.

The atmosphere over Revolutionary America contained less than 300 parts per million of carbon dioxide. Modern levels now exceed 420.

That difference sounds abstract until one realizes:
the very chemistry of the sky has changed.

Philadelphia during July of 1776 experienced temperatures that modern Americans might consider surprisingly mild, rising from around 68°F in the morning to roughly 76°F in the afternoon during key Revolutionary moments.

Imagine trying to explain modern Phoenix summers to George Washington.

The man would have crossed the Delaware backward.

Heating in 1776 came primarily from wood-burning fireplaces. Entire families often gathered close to central hearths during winter because much of the home remained freezing. Bedrooms could become painfully cold overnight. Water froze indoors.

And yet fireplaces themselves were inefficient. Much heat escaped through chimneys, filling homes with smoke while consuming massive amounts of wood.

Comfort existed…
but only in limited pockets.

Summer cooling relied almost entirely on architecture and patience. Homes were built strategically to capture airflow. Windows remained open whenever possible. Wealthier homes used shaded verandas, thicker masonry, and tall ceilings to reduce heat buildup.

Americans in 1776 did not “control” climate so much as negotiate with it daily.

And perhaps that shaped psychology itself.

Nature still felt larger than civilization.

Storms could isolate communities for weeks.
Drought could destroy harvests.
Winter could kill livestock.
Heat could overwhelm bodies with little escape.

The climate was not background.
It was authority.

Even scientific weather monitoring remained relatively primitive. Thermometers were still uncommon enough to feel novel in many households. Men like Thomas Jefferson and Edward Holyoke carefully recorded temperatures and weather patterns partly because systematic observation itself still felt groundbreaking.

America was beginning to measure the atmosphere scientifically…
while still remaining deeply at its mercy.

Then industrialization arrived.

And slowly, almost invisibly at first, humanity’s relationship with climate transformed completely.

Coal-powered factories spread across cities.
Steam engines multiplied.
Railroads expanded.
Oil consumption exploded.
Electricity reshaped civilization.

The Industrial Revolution did not merely change economies.

It changed the atmosphere.

At first, however, most Americans experienced these developments positively. Industrial heating systems, electric fans, refrigeration, insulation, and eventually air conditioning radically improved comfort and survival.

Entire regions of the United States became easier to inhabit year-round because technology increasingly insulated people from weather extremes.

Air conditioning alone transformed modern America.

Without widespread AC systems, much of the explosive population growth across places like Arizona, Texas, Nevada, and Florida would have been nearly unimaginable.

Modern Americans now move daily between carefully controlled climate bubbles:
house,
car,
office,
store,
school,
gym.

Many people rarely experience raw weather directly anymore.

Civilization learned how to manufacture indoor seasons.

And yet hidden inside this triumph was a growing paradox.

The systems humans created to control indoor climate increasingly contributed to changing the outdoor climate itself.

Fossil fuels powered:
heating,
cooling,
transportation,
electric grids,
factories,
data centers,
consumer goods,
and modern convenience at enormous scale.

Over generations, greenhouse gases accumulated quietly in the atmosphere.

And by the late 20th and early 21st centuries, scientists increasingly warned that humanity was warming the planet itself.

The numbers became difficult to ignore.

The United States has warmed roughly 2.6°F since 1970. The 2010s became the hottest decade on record. Heat waves intensified. Wildfires expanded. Droughts worsened. Coastal flooding increased.

Entire ecosystems began shifting.

Earlier Americans feared nature’s power.
Modern Americans increasingly fear humanity’s power over nature.

And now, in 2026, climate control means two entirely different things simultaneously.

On one level, it still means ordinary domestic comfort:
thermostats,
air conditioners,
heat pumps,
insulation,
energy-efficient appliances,
and climate-controlled architecture.

But on another level, “climate control” now refers to a civilization attempting to prevent catastrophic planetary warming itself.

The United States has invested heavily in renewable energy, emissions reductions, electric vehicles, methane regulation, and large-scale climate policy initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act and infrastructure modernization efforts.

The nation now officially seeks:
net-zero emissions,
cleaner electricity,
lower carbon output,
and long-term environmental resilience.

And yet progress remains tangled in politics, economics, technology, and human habit.

Modern civilization depends profoundly on the very systems contributing to the crisis:
cars,
shipping,
air travel,
electric grids,
industrial agriculture,
global manufacturing,
consumer convenience.

Human beings seek comfort…
but comfort sometimes carries hidden costs.

Perhaps that is one of the great themes of modernity itself.

And still, despite all the conflict and complexity, there remains something strangely hopeful inside this story.

For the first time in history, humanity possesses the scientific ability to observe the atmosphere almost as a living system:
satellites,
climate models,
global temperature records,
ice core analysis,
ocean monitoring,
and atmospheric chemistry measurements.

The species altering the climate is also becoming increasingly aware of what it is doing.

Awareness does not guarantee wisdom.
But it matters.

Eddie, if you could walk through America in 2026, you would surely stand astonished watching:
millions of humming air conditioners cooling homes during record-breaking heat waves,
glass skyscrapers sealed against outdoor temperatures,
wildfire smoke drifting across entire states,
scientists tracking hurricanes from orbit,
children learning the phrase “climate anxiety,”
and politicians arguing endlessly over atmospheric chemistry itself.

But perhaps what would astonish you most is this:

In your century, humans struggled to survive the climate.
In ours, we discovered the climate was struggling to survive us.

And somewhere between the fireplace and the carbon molecule, civilization crossed a threshold no earlier generation could fully imagine.

With open windows, wood smoke, thermostats, melting glaciers, and one species slowly realizing the sky is not separate from itself,

What does comfort cost?

Because every civilization creates technologies designed to reduce suffering:
warmth in winter,
cool air in summer,

mobility across distance.

And for generations, those innovations felt miraculous.

They still are.

But modern humanity now faces strange realization:
the systems protecting us from nature can also reshape nature itself.

The fireplace became the furnace.
The furnace became the power grid.
The power grid became planetary chemistry.

And perhaps the real challenge of the modern age is not abandoning comfort entirely…
but learning whether human beings can create comfort sustainably enough to leave a livable world behind.

After all, climate control was never only about temperature.

It was always about the relationship between humanity and the environment surrounding it.

For centuries, nature controlled us.

Now we are discovering what happens when we begin controlling nature back.
