“In Memoriam: A Memorial Day Advent Series” – Part Fifteen: The Bermuda Triangle

Dear Radar,

What happened? What did you do with it? Where is the body?

For decades, we feared the journey to – or even over – the Bermuda Triangle. So many ships and planes simply disappeared in that stretch of ocean, and with every loss came more questions, more whispers. The Bermuda Triangle became more than a place – it became a legend. The danger was ever-present, and the mystery? It fanned the flames of the unknown like gasoline on fire.

And oh, the stories. There were so many. News stories. Word-of-mouth stories. Everybody knew somebody – or knew somebody who knew somebody – who disappeared in the Triangle. It was like the ultimate game of “six degrees of separation,” except the prize was fear, and the story always came with a twist of the supernatural.

And when someone did make it through – and many did – they couldn’t resist embellishing the smallest incident. A grey cloud became a full-blown hurricane. A little turbulence became a violent, earth-shaking crash. Every story was listened to with wide eyes and bated breath, because the less explainable the story, the more real the fear. And who could check the facts? Who would even want to? The mystery fed itself. The stories grew, and the legend stood…until it didn’t.

Suddenly, the Bermuda Triangle, itself, disappeared.

The stories stopped. The headlines dried up. The disappearances became fewer and fewer, and when they did happen, they rarely made the news – certainly not the headlines. The search for the missing stopped, as though the world had simply…moved on.

So what happened to the Triangle?

Did it just disappear? Was it a victim of its own making? Or is there something even more sinister going on? Was the Bermuda Triangle simply a victim of its own mythology, a place that burned so brightly in the collective consciousness that it eventually snuffed itself out?

Did it meet up with Atlantis and retire? Did it get bored of scaring us?

All we know is that we will never sail through – or fly over – that part of the Atlantic without wondering…without feeling that nostalgic fear bubble up inside us. And if we do disappear while we’re in it, listen to the wind. We’ll be whispering, “I told you so.”

Rest in peace, Bermuda Triangle. Thank you for making even your death a mystery.

In loving memory,
~ The Radical Left
