“In Memoriam: A Memorial Day Advent Series” – Part Three: The Water-Hose

Dear Water Bottle,

Sure, you’re convenient, and you fit neatly into our backpacks, but let’s be real – you’re no replacement for our long-lost backyard hose. Not only was it always available, but it was so much more fun to drink from. And that moment, waiting for the cold water to finally come out after the sun had been baking the hose all day – it was like waiting in line for ice cream, the anticipation of that first refreshing sip.

Sure, we couldn’t carry the hose with us everywhere, but why would we need to? There would always be another hose wherever we went. And it was like an old friend – familiar, reliable, and always there when you needed it.

And the taste? Don’t kid yourself, Water Bottle. The taste of water from a bottle will never compare to the taste of water from a hose. It was almost holy – holy hose water. The kind of drink that quenched more than just your thirst. It connected you to the earth in a way that no plastic bottle could. There was a purity in the rawness, the unfiltered, sun-warmed rush of it.

And then there’s the environmental impact… that glorious hose didn’t just stave our thirst; it saved the planet. No single-use plastic, no waste – just one long stretch of rubber that brought us relief.

Yes, we’ll miss drinking from a hose. But if we see one lying around – pouring water onto the ground – we may just stop and see if it still tastes the same. And in that moment, it’ll be like time hasn’t passed at all.

Rest in peace, Water-Hose-Respite. Your refreshing taste will forever echo in those of us who drank from you.

In loving memory,
~ The Radical Left
