Dear Balance Scales,
Thank you for the pause.
You’re the unsung heroes in the decision-making process. Without you, we would just act on instinct, react based on habit, fall in line with the path already paved. But you’re different. You give us a moment to stop, to reflect, to weigh what’s in front of us. You let us think.
The beauty of reason is that it challenges the very patterns that drive us. It doesn’t simply accept the way things have always been. It asks questions. It looks at the data. It compares. It gives us the chance to escape the whirlpool of instinct and become something else, if only for a moment. That is a small but crucial act of free will.
When we pause, we give ourselves the space to choose a different option, to step outside our “facticity” (the way things have always been), and reconsider. We might not always take the leap, but the fact that we have the option to step back from our ingrained habits – that, in itself, is a little taste of freedom.
You, Balance Scales, allow us to assess the consequences. You help us look beyond our immediate preferences and past decisions and take in a broader view. Without you, we would be prisoners to our own programming, caught in a loop. With you, we are allowed the grace of perspective. And in that grace, we glimpse what it might mean to be free.
So, we turn to you, dear reader:
Has there ever been a time when weighing the pros and cons led you to a decision you wouldn’t have made otherwise?
How did it go? What happened when you stepped outside the patterns and took the time to think, to deliberate, to really weigh your choices?
Weighing the pros and cons with you,
