An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 06 – Metaphysics 3 (Metaphysical Monism) – Part 4: How old will you be in heaven?

Dear Pearly Gates,

As we contemplate the mysteries of existence beyond life, we are drawn to a peculiar question: How old will you be in heaven? This question, though framed in metaphors, subtly unveils the philosophical divide between metaphysical idealism and physicalism.

From the idealist perspective, age is but an illusion. In the realm of pure consciousness, time and age lose their meaning. There is no fixed age in the afterlife, only timeless existence, where the essence of the self transcends the constraints of physical aging.

On the other hand, from the physicalist viewpoint, the idea of age is intrinsic to our identity. The very concept of a perfect age presupposes that our being is bound to the physical form. Thus, the question of age in the afterlife highlights the limits of physicalism, revealing the challenge of maintaining identity without the body.

In posing this question, we don’t seek to provide a definitive answer. Instead, we invite you, dear reader, to reflect on what your own perspective reveals about the nature of reality.

From outside the gates,
