An Introduction to Philosophy (RLL style) Week 02 – Logic Part 5: Are aliens real?

Dear Sherlock Holmes,

Elementary, my dear Watson! Or should we say, abductive? You’ve taught us that sometimes the truth isn’t about what’s been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, but about making the best possible inference from the clues we have. Today, we stand on that same foggy street corner of reasoning, wondering about aliens and other mysteries that live just beyond the reach of hard evidence.

Abductive logic is the art of weaving together the best explanation for the puzzle pieces we have, even if we don’t have all the pieces yet. It’s about finding the most reasonable belief in a sea of unknowns. So whether we’re asking if we’re alone in the universe or grappling with any other great mystery, abductive reasoning is our trusty magnifying glass.

And here’s our question to you: Is there a belief you hold that hasn’t been proven true or false, but that you find reasonable based on the clues you do have? Let’s celebrate the beauty of not knowing for sure and the art of making our best guesses with a little abductive flair.

With curiosity and a wink,
