Dear John,
In 1776, manufacturing in America did not roar with engines or glow with robotic precision.

People often knew exactly who made the things they owned because those people lived nearby.
Then came the Revolution, and suddenly the colonies needed more than handmade comforts. They needed war supplies.

The Continental Army desperately relied upon craftsmen, or “artificers,” to transform an overwhelmingly agrarian society into something capable of sustaining war.

Cars, once luxuries for the wealthy, became attainable for ordinary families.

Working-class Americans gained access to comforts and technologies that kings in 1776 could scarcely dream of possessing.

Domestic labor shrank.
Entire lifestyles emerged from the prosperity industrial manufacturing helped create.
But every revolution carries shadows alongside light.
As manufacturing scaled upward, many workers became increasingly disconnected from the products they helped create.
The shoemaker who once crafted an entire shoe became a worker responsible for attaching a single component.
The intimacy between maker and object weakened.
Craftsmanship often gave way to speed, quantity, and profit margins.
Handmade imperfections were replaced by machine uniformity.
Goods became cheaper and more accessible, yet often less personal.
And now, in 2026, another transformation is unfolding.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing manufacturing once again.
Machines no longer merely follow instructions.
Increasingly, they analyze, predict, adapt, and optimize independently.
Smart factories communicate internally through networks of sensors and AI systems.
3D printers can manufacture custom parts on demand.
Robots increasingly perform dangerous, repetitive, or highly precise tasks.

The machine gave us comfort.
The artisan gave us meaning.
The future may depend on remembering we need both.
