Dear John,
In 1776, symmetry ruled America.
Not democracy…yet.
Not equality.
Not plumbing.
Symmetry.
Buildings announced order long before the nation itself fully achieved it.

And, of course, enslaved labor built much of this architecture.
Grand homes rested physically upon exploitation from the beginning.

Honestly, elevators would absolutely melt colonial minds.
But beneath all the steel, algorithms, and engineered timber, I suspect you would recognize something ancient instantly.
Architecture still performs same essential human task:
turning survival into meaning.
People still build for:
protection,
status,
community,
beauty,
memory,
faith,
commerce,
and hope.
The materials changed.
The scale changed.
The software became terrifyingly advanced.
But humanity still longs to shape space into reflection of who we believe ourselves to be.
