A Letter to John Bartram (1699–1777)
Dear John,
In 1776, Americans breathed air that would feel almost supernatural to many modern lungs. 🌲🖤
Not perfectly clean air.
Not untouched air.
But air that still belonged mostly to nature rather than industry.
There were no eight-lane highways roaring through cities.
No jet trails streaking overhead.
No chemical haze hanging above sprawling suburbs.
No refineries glowing beside interstate exits through the night.
The atmosphere had not yet become industrialized.
And there you stood, John Bartram, farmer, botanist, explorer of forests and rivers, living in a world where the dominant smells of America were:
pine,
mud,
saltwater,
horses,
wood smoke,
wet earth,
and growing things.
In 1776, air pollution in America remained minimal, localized, and overwhelmingly organic.
Most smoke came from:
wood-burning hearths,
cooking fires,
blacksmith shops,
small workshops,
or seasonal land clearing.
During winter, cities like Philadelphia or Boston could become hazy with dense wood smoke drifting through crowded streets, especially during cold weather. But even urban pollution remained tiny compared to what later centuries would unleash.
The colonies themselves remained largely agrarian.
Most Americans lived closer to forests than factories.
And although the Industrial Revolution was beginning to emerge overseas in Great Britain, with steam engines and coal-powered industry slowly transforming Europe, America in 1776 had not yet fully entered the age of smokestacks.
The sky itself still largely belonged to weather rather than machinery.
That changed dramatically during the 19th century.
Industrialization arrived like a giant furnace.
Coal-powered factories spread across cities.
Railroads exploded across the continent.
Steel mills rose beside rivers.
Manufacturing centers multiplied rapidly.
And suddenly Americans began breathing the byproducts of industrial progress itself.
Cities like Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and St. Louis became infamous for thick smoke, soot-covered buildings, and skies permanently stained gray.
Coal smoke darkened windows.
Covered laundry.
Blackened snow.
Coated monuments.
Entered lungs.
In some industrial cities, daytime skies became so dim beneath factory smoke that workers and drivers reportedly required artificial light even during midday.
And perhaps most fascinating of all:
many Americans initially celebrated this pollution.
Smoking chimneys symbolized:
jobs,
growth,
prosperity,
industry,
and modern power.
A dirty sky meant economic success.
That reversal feels almost impossible to modern sensibilities.
Today, Americans often travel hundreds of miles searching for clean mountain air.
But in the 19th century, smoke frequently represented civilization itself.
The consequences, however, quickly became severe.
Coal combustion flooded cities with soot, sulfur dioxide, and toxic particles.
Smog episodes triggered respiratory disease and dramatically increased mortality rates.
Industrial neighborhoods became environmental sacrifice zones long before such language existed.
And still, governments moved slowly.
Business interests often argued that pollution was simply the unavoidable price of progress. Attempts to regulate smoke were dismissed as threats to economic growth.
Human beings have always possessed an astonishing ability to normalize whatever slowly harms them.
By the late 19th century, however, conditions had become impossible to ignore.
Cities began passing some of America’s first smoke-abatement ordinances.
Organizations like the Smoke Abatement League emerged to demand cleaner air and public accountability.
But the 20th century brought an entirely new scale of atmospheric crisis.
Industrial production accelerated further.
Automobiles flooded cities.
Oil consumption exploded.
Suburbs expanded.
Energy demand skyrocketed.
And America entered the age of modern smog.
One of the first major warning signs arrived in 1943, when Los Angeles became engulfed by a mysterious silvery-blue haze so severe that residents initially feared a wartime chemical attack.
Eyes burned.
Throats hurt.
Visibility collapsed.
Flights were disrupted.
The culprit was not enemy warfare.
It was civilization itself:
sunlight reacting chemically with automobile emissions and industrial pollutants.
Human beings had begun manufacturing entirely new skies.
Then came the Donora disaster.
In 1948, a temperature inversion trapped industrial emissions from zinc and steel plants above the small town of Donora. Toxic smog suffocated the community for days.
Twenty people died.
Thousands became ill.
Entire neighborhoods struggled simply to breathe.
The Donora tragedy shocked the nation and helped awaken America to a terrifying truth:
air pollution was not merely ugly.
It was deadly.
The following decades brought further crises:
killer smog events in New York City,
mounting asthma rates,
acid rain,
vehicle emissions,
and growing public outrage.
Finally, the environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s forced major federal action.
The Clean Air Act of 1970 fundamentally transformed American environmental policy. Alongside the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the law established national air quality standards and aggressively regulated industrial pollution and vehicle emissions.
The results were remarkable.
Leaded gasoline was gradually phased out, causing airborne lead levels to collapse dramatically. Major pollutants declined by more than 70% over subsequent decades despite population growth and increased economic activity.
Millions of lives improved because governments, scientists, activists, and ordinary citizens finally acknowledged something basic but profound:
human beings should not have to poison themselves simply to power civilization.
And yet the 21st century introduced a more complicated atmospheric reality.
America’s air is vastly cleaner than during the peak industrial eras of the early and mid-20th century.
But modern pollution became subtler.
More invisible.
More global.
Today’s threats include:
ozone,
fine particulate matter,
vehicle emissions,
industrial chemicals,
wildfire smoke,
and climate-driven atmospheric instability.
And unlike the thick black smoke of earlier centuries, modern pollution often hides behind beautiful blue skies.
That may be the most psychologically unsettling shift of all.
The air can LOOK clean…
while quietly remaining dangerous.
Millions of Americans now monitor daily air-quality indexes through smartphone apps before jogging, exercising, or letting children play outside.
Wildfire smoke from western states sometimes drifts thousands of miles across the continent, turning sunsets orange and filling cities with hazardous particles.
Climate change increasingly intensifies drought, heat, and fire seasons, creating atmospheric conditions unlike anything earlier Americans experienced.
Even more troubling:
air pollution remains deeply unequal.
Poor communities,
industrial neighborhoods,
historically redlined urban districts,
and many communities of color continue facing disproportionate exposure to polluted air.
The atmosphere does not burden all lungs equally.
And yet there remains hope inside this story too.
America DID reduce smog.
DID reduce lead poisoning.
DID clean many industrial skies.
DID prove that environmental regulation could improve public health dramatically.
Human beings are capable of repair when they choose to become honest about consequences.
John, if you could walk through America in 2026, you would surely stand astonished watching:
millions of automobiles flowing endlessly through concrete corridors,
cities glowing beneath electrical haze visible from orbit,
scientists measuring invisible particles smaller than dust,
children carrying inhalers to school,
wildfire smoke crossing entire states,
and ordinary citizens checking air-quality apps before deciding whether the outdoors itself feels safe today.
But I imagine you would also recognize something strangely familiar beneath all the technology.
Human beings are still learning the same lesson nature has whispered since the beginning:
every generation eventually breathes the consequences of the world it builds.
In your century, people looked upward and saw weather.
In ours, we often look upward and see consequences.
With wood smoke, factory soot, catalytic converters, wildfire haze, and one fragile atmosphere wrapped around every living thing on Earth,

And dear reader, perhaps the deeper question after 250 years is this:
What are we willing to breathe in exchange for progress?
Because every era defines “development” differently.
1776 burned wood to survive winter.
Industrial America burned coal to power expansion.
The 20th century burned oil to fuel mobility, suburbia, and modern convenience.
And now the 21st century wrestles with invisible atmospheric consequences created by generations chasing growth without fully counting the cost.
The factories brought jobs.
The highways brought freedom.
The automobiles brought mobility.
The electricity brought comfort.
None of those things were illusions.
But neither were the consequences.
And perhaps that is the strange tragedy of air pollution:
human beings often cannot see the danger clearly until it has already entered the lungs.
Still, this story also contains something hopeful.
Because America proved environmental repair is possible.
Cities once buried beneath smog became breathable again.
Lead levels fell dramatically.
Rivers recovered.
Skies cleared.
Not perfectly.
Not equally.
Not permanently.
But genuinely.
Which means the atmosphere carries another lesson too:
damage is real…
but so is responsibility.
After all, air may be invisible…
yet it remains the most shared thing human beings possess.
Every breath connects us to one another.
And perhaps that makes protecting the atmosphere less about politics…
and more about remembering that every civilization eventually inhales the future it creates.
