Dear 0,
We remember when you didn’t just stand alone. You were the key to all information.
Just one push, and answers would pour into our ears. A quick request, and in a few moments, the world opened up to us.
And not only that, but the knowledge – the answers – came from a real, live human being. A person who would help us, guide us, and answer our questions. It wasn’t just a quick Google search – it was a conversation.
Sometimes, it felt like being found after being lost. Like spotting the ship that would take us out of isolation and into the knowing. In an instant, we could be connected to someone who had the answers we were seeking. Someone who could tell us where to go, who to talk to, and how to get there.
Because it wasn’t just phone numbers we could get from the operator. Oh no, we could get anything. Addresses. The time. Local resources. Names of businesses. And when no one else had an answer, we could always call “0.” Just like Google – only better, because it wasn’t a faceless algorithm – it was a human on the other end. And if they didn’t have the answer, they’d know exactly who to point us to, where to go, and which number to dial next. It wasn’t always the quickest solution, but it was always a solution.
And let’s not forget – this worked even when the power was down. When the internet was gone, when nothing else was working, you could always count on “0.” That was one of the best reasons to dial you up. The lifeline that still worked, no matter what else was going on.
Rest in peace, Telephone Operator. Even in the age of the internet, we still have questions saved just for you.
In loving memory,
