What Makes Christmas, Christmas to You?

Dear True Meaning of Christmas,

Every December, we hear the same refrain: “Keep Christ in Christmas,” or “Remember the reason for the season.” But as I look around, I see that Christmas has evolved into something much more personal, and maybe a little less tied to a single story or figure. It’s become a patchwork of different meanings for different people.

Let’s be honest: we don’t need Santa Claus to celebrate Christmas. We don’t really need the gifts, the lights, or the endless shopping lists (just ask the Grinch). And for many, we don’t even need to focus on the religious narrative. Christmas has become a season that carries a different meaning for each of us.

So here’s the question I want to ask you: What is the one thing that makes Christmas feel like Christmas to you?

Is it the warmth of family gathered around a table? The taste of a certain homemade dish that only appears once a year? The sound of a particular song that you’ve loved since childhood? The quiet moment of peace when the world outside seems to pause?

Whatever it is, that’s your true meaning of Christmas. It doesn’t have to be the same as anyone else’s. It doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s rules. It just has to be that one essential piece that makes this season special to you.

Because when we strip away all the extras, all the things that society or tradition says we “need,” we find that the true meaning is whatever brings us joy, connection, and a sense of peace.

So this year, I invite you to think about what truly makes Christmas yours. Whatever that is, honor it. Let it be the heart of your celebration. And if some of the old traditions or pressures fall away in the process, that’s okay too.

In the end, the true meaning of Christmas is the one that lights up your heart.

Happy Festivus,
